What Does the Body Remember?
What happens when we listen to the parts of ourselves that cannot be explained through language? And how can voice, movement, rhythm, imagination and ritual become tools for bringing hidden stories to the surface?
In an intensive masterclass, artist and performer Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura invites participants into her practice of soul-voice storytelling: a physical, vocal and imaginative approach to performance rooted in storytelling, ritual, ancestry, transformation and the intelligence of the body. The workshop is conceived as a collective artistic laboratory. Rather than learning a fixed method, participants will be invited to investigate their own bodies, voices, memories and imaginations as sources of material.
What To Expect
The days will combine physical and vocal practices, individual and collective exercises, improvisation, storytelling, rhythmic work, image-making and the development of personal performance material. The process will be demanding, playful, intimate and experimental. Participants should be prepared to work with their bodies and voices every day, to take creative risks and to enter unfamiliar territory. The body as an archive — listening to physical memory, instinct and sensation. Voice beyond language — discovering the voice as sound, rhythm, emotion, invocation and character. Storytelling through the whole body — moving between spoken word, movement, song, image and gesture.Ritual and transformation — exploring repetition, rhythm, presence and collective energy as tools for creating altered states of attention.
The wild and the unknown — making space for instinct, chaos, vulnerability, power and the parts of ourselves that resist definition. Participants will be encouraged to move beyond the pressure to “perform well” and instead develop a deeper relationship with presence, listening and transformation. This is a space for experimentation: to follow an impulse, to make noise, to become quiet, to fail, to repeat, to remember, to invent and to discover.
Who Is This For?
The masterclass is open to performers, actors, dancers, musicians, singers, storytellers, visual artists and interdisciplinary makers who are interested in expanding their artistic practice and exploring the relationship between body, voice, imagination and ritual.
Participants from different disciplines and levels of experience are welcome, provided they have a genuine commitment to physical and creative exploration.
